Polar bears will usually stay underwater for around a minute before needing to surface for a breath, although the longest dive recorded for a polar bear lasted 3 minutes and 10 seconds without surfacing! So, averaging it out, some say that a polar bear can hold its breath underwater for around 2 minutes or so. How Long Can Polar Bears Stay Under Water? They usually only need to make fairly shallow dives when stalking prey or searching for kelp. ![]() No one really knows how deep a polar bear can dive but researchers estimate that they can dive down to around 6 metres or 20 feet below the surface. To give you a point of reference, an average human can swim at around 2 miles per hour…so we wouldn’t have much luck out-swimming a polar bear. A polar bear can swim at a speed of approximately 10 kilometers per hour or 6.2 miles per hour. Not only are they good swimmers, polar bears are pretty fast swimmers too. According to a study published in Zoology, polar bears regularly swim distances of 48 kilometers or 30 miles – that’s a long way! There has even been a recorded case when a polar bear swam 354 kilometers or 220 miles! It’s lucky they’re designed so well for swimming, the ability to swim great distances may help to save them in these times when the sea ice is melting through climate change. If there is a group, the second polar bear is a cub. Polar bears spawn above grass or ice in snowy plains, ice spikes, regular and deep frozen ocean biomes in groups of up to two at light level 7 or higher.
